Power. Precision. Paint—Without the Air. Without the Overspray.

Airless paint sprayers are called “airless” because they do not use compressed air to atomize (break up) paint into tiny droplets. Instead, they rely on high fluid pressure alone, typically between 1500 and 3000 PSI, to force paint through a small nozzle or tip, creating a fine spray.

There are two main types of airless paint sprayers, each with unique strengths. Airless paint sprayers are widely used for applying paint efficiently and evenly, especially over large surfaces, moreover these sprayers use high pressure (usually 1500–3000 PSI) to atomize paint without the use of compressed air:

1. Piston Pump Airless Paint Sprayers.

  • How it works: Uses a piston that moves up and down to draw and pressurize paint.
  • Advantages:
    • High pressure = finer atomization = smoother finish.
    • Ideal for thicker coatings like latex, acrylic, and elastomeric paints.
  • Best for: Professional painters, large-scale jobs (e.g., exterior walls, commercial spaces).
  • Example: Graco Magnum X7.

2. Diaphragm Pump Airless Paint Sprayers.

  • How it works: A flexible diaphragm moves back and forth to pressurize the paint.
  • Advantages: Delivers consistent pressure. Quieter operation.
  • Best for: Medium-scale jobs, furniture, cabinetry, and indoor painting.
  • Example: Dino DP-6860E Electric Airless Diaphragm Pump Paint Sprayer.

Bonus: Cordless Airless Paint Sprayers.

  • Battery-powered, great for mobility and small touch-up jobs.
  • Lower pressure and capacity.
  • Best for DIY or remote locations.

Airless paint sprayers are called “airless” because they do not use compressed air to atomize (break up) paint into tiny droplets. Instead, they rely on high fluid pressure alone, typically between 1500 and 3000 PSI, to force paint through a small nozzle or tip, creating a fine spray.

How it works:

  1. A pump (piston or diaphragm) pressurizes the paint.
  2. The pressurized paint is forced through a tiny orifice in the spray gun tip.
  3. The sudden release of pressure causes the paint to atomize into a spray.

Contrast with Air Sprayers:

Conventional (Air) Sprayers: Use compressed air to atomize paint, resulting in more overspray and less efficiency.
Airless Sprayers: Use pressure only, producing faster coverage, thicker coatings, and better penetration into surfaces like wood grain or porous materials.
