Springtime has been traditionally been the best time to paint your pool in Cape Town. Weather patterns are changing and traditional springtime weather is now unpredictable, so we recommend painting your pool late Spring to Early summer. We recommend you need a solid week of mostly dry and sunny weather with temperatures no higher than 30 degrees, no less than 10 degrees with humidity around the 50% mark to paint your pool.

Please allow 1 week for the paint to cure before refilling your pool with water.

Research your weather patterns including humidity and wind and find the optimal time period to paint. Check with a reliable weather forecaster and allow 2 weeks of no rain to complete your pool refurbishment from painting to filling.

A general rule in South Africa is the southern areas are winter rainfall while the north it is summer rainfall.

Tips for pool painting:

After cleaning, the surface needs to dry for 3+ days to remove surface moisture and water held inside small voids and fissures in the concrete or plaster surface. The trapped moisture can cause blistering and peeling.

A pool requires 7 days of good weather before refilling the pool.

Do not paint in direct sunlight. Painting a very hot surface in direct sunlight will cause blistering and pinholes due to the rapid evaporation of the solvents in the paint.
For best results, paint when the sun’s rays are very low, apply in the shade or very early in the day when the sun is rising.

How long must a pool dry before refilling?

Do not paint if rain is expected within 4-6 hours. Please allow an extra day on the 7 days for every day of rain.
Dampness, rain and excessive humidity will retard the painting curing time required before filling the pool.

Allow 12-24 hours minimum before re-coating.

To increase the life span of your pool paint please follow the chemical dosing instructions.
A pool requires 7 days of good weather before refilling the pool.
For indoor pools, allow 14 days drying time before filling the pool. Ventilate and used forced air, fans, or blowers, to move static air and remove solvent vapours that will collect in low-lying areas.

“What if it rains within the 7 days?”

If this happens, pump the water out the bottom of the pool as soon as you safely can. As long as the pool paint has at least a day to dry before getting hit by rain, it should be fine. Just don’t let it sit under any water for any longer than necessary. Important: do not cover the pool with a tarp to protect if from the rain. This does more harm than good by trapping solvent in the paint and not allowing the paint to cure properly.

In good drying conditions, an outdoor pool requires 7 days of good weather before refilling the pool. For every day of rainy weather, add one more day to the 7 days. Indoor pools require 2 weeks due to the reduced ventilation and circulation inherent with indoor pools. Heat or direct exposure to hot sun and weather unfortunately will not speed up these required cure times.
