Product Overview.

Earthcote Iron Paint is a specialty coating designed to create a weathered, rusted effect, reminiscent of storm-battered bollards at harbours and ship hulls under repair. Rust tells a story—it’s history in motion. This brush-on coating brings an authentic aged aesthetic to both interior and exterior surfaces.

Key Features:
Suitable for interior and exterior use.
Contains organic iron filings and a rusting activator.
Designed for pots, detailed walls, balustrades, and ironwork accents.
Naturally corrodes over time, creating a dynamic, evolving finish.
Not suitable for wet areas (e.g., showers) or high-traffic surfaces.

Aesthetic & Inspiration:
Inspired by industrial decay and maritime history, Iron Paint transforms surfaces with an aged, oxidised patina. The organic rusting process ensures no two applications are identical, delivering a one-of-a-kind, lived-in charm.

Iron Paint Technical Details:

  • Surface Compatibility: Ideal for decorative cement plastered walls, pots, and ironwork. Not recommended for structural steel or areas where rust runoff could stain adjoining surfaces.
  • Packaging:
    • Earthcote Iron Paint: 1L (plastic bucket)
    • Earthcote Rusting Agent: 250ml & 1L (plastic bottles)
  • Colour Transformation:
    • Before oxidation: Dark charcoal to black
    • After oxidation: Rich, organic rust tones

Application Guidelines:

Preparation

Ensure surfaces are properly primed before application. Recommended primers:
Midas Masonry Primer for masonry surfaces.
Midas Metal Etch Primer for ferrous and galvanized surfaces

Application Process.

  1. Apply Midafelt 225 tinted to dark charcoal/black as a base coat. Allow to dry.
  2. Stir Earthcote Iron Paint thoroughly to keep iron particles evenly suspended. Apply the first coat in a crisscross pattern using a brush (±4m²/L). Allow to dry for 4 hours.
  3. Apply a second coat in the same manner. As the second coat begins to dry, apply Midas Rusting Agent from top to bottom, working it into the surface for an authentic rusting effect.

Sealing (Optional):
Sealing is not recommended as it may diminish the rusting effect. If sealing is required, use Midas Colour Retaining Primer (1–2 coats). Incorrect sealers will turn the rusted surface black.

Coverage & Drying Times:
Earthcote Iron Paint: ±4m²/L per coat | Drying time: 4 hours between coats.
Midas Rusting Agent: Applied onto semi-dry second coat for activation

Important Notes:

Rust is a living finish—it continues to evolve over time.
Do not leave coatings for more than 48 hours between applications to prevent contamination.
Weather & Application Factors: Avoid extreme temperatures (below 10ºC or above 35ºC) and high humidity (>85%).
Batch Consistency: Iron Paint is tinted in batches—order sufficient quantities to complete your project to ensure consistency.
Lap Marks: Keep a wet edge during application and avoid stopping mid-panel.

Cleaning & Maintenance:
Cleaning Tools: Wipe excess paint from brushes and rollers with an absorbent cloth, then rinse with water.
Environmental Responsibility: Dispose of paint and containers responsibly. Avoid washing tools where runoff can enter storm drains.
